Introducing the Textiles of Bali & Indonesia

This insightful class introduces textiles from across Indonesia, displaying the various ikat, batik and supplementary weaving techniques used by the nation`s weavers. A contrast is made between handspun and commercial threads, natural and chemical dyes, backstrap and mechanical loom weaving. There is an introductory discussion of the ikat dyeing process and the use of natural dyes. Focusing on Bali and Nusa Tenggara, the class also explores the ritual use of textiles.

Textiles & Their Place in Indonesian Culture

This fascinating class examines the history and traditional uses of textiles in Indonesia. Spice trade influences juxtapose with indigenous motifs throughout the archipelago: echoes of Indian trade cloths abound; imagery relates to defining aspects of the local environment; history and genealogy entwine. Uses range from traditional dress, to offerings, to the paraphernalia of marriages and funerals. The class includes an in-depth discussion of the ikat process and the use of natural dyes.

Natural Dye Batik Class

This class offers a unique insight into the botany, dye processes and practice of Indonesia’s textile traditions. Starting with an explanation of the work of the Bebali Foundation and a walk through the Bebali natural dye plant garden, you will learn about the more than a hundred plants are used by traditional weavers across Indonesia to make natural dyes for cotton, silk and other fibers.
