Tiga negeri, meaning three lands, refers to the regions that contributed dye for this type of batik: red from Kudus, blue from Pekalongan on Java’s north coast, and brown soga from Central Java.

Flower and bird motifs play across a background of small circles called gringsing in the center panel, while a sida muki diamond pattern contains various motifs inspired by nature. A traditional protective double border with small lines and vines contains the entire cloth.

The yellowish brown would have been achieved by using a significant amount of dye made from the wood of Maclura cochinchinensis.

Signed by the creator, Nj Sie Djen Soen, this antique batik is in excellent condition.

Hand drawn batik, single panel on cotton cloth. Hand sewn rolled edges. Made with natural dyes by Nj Sie Dijen Soen in Lasem, Java. c.1920. Size 234 x 106 cm / 92 x 41.5 in
