Cotton Slit Tapestry Weave

Cerik langah literally means a cloth with spacing. This cloth has been woven on a backstrap loom and the pattern has been achieved with a slit tapestry technique. Traditionally this type of open weave textile is worn as a breast cloth and used for ritual dance throughout Bali. The spaces are said to be the way that the dancer is able to shift between the realms of human and the gods.

This project with Threads of Life and Pejeng weavers is to revitalise old styles of Balinese ritual textiles that were discontinued in the 1970s and 80s as women were encouraged to find other means of livelihood, such as carrying bricks for building and roadwork.
