This textile was made in Nusa Penida which has some of the most ritually potent temples in Bali. Threads of Life works with farmers and weavers across Bali to re-establish natural-dye and sacred weaving traditions, and with the Balinese public to revitalize the role played by these textile in the island's cultural life.
The cepuk is a very important sacred textile for the Balinese. It is believed to both protect the wearer and to open a devotional connection to the ancestral spirits during various life transition ceremonies between birth and death.
