This cushion is made from handspun heirloom cotton and woven on backstrap loom in Java using natural dyes and hand drawn batik. The motif on this cushion is called Panji serong and relates to a traditional tale about falling in love. A batik textile such as this would be used as part of the gifts a man's family gives to the woman's family when they intend to marry.
Tuban is on the northern coast of Java where trade with India, Arabia and China was carried on for centuries. In Tuban weavers still collect their own cotton and spin it into thread which they weave into cloth and batik designs using a wax resist technique. The back panel is handspun cotton also from Tuban.
These cushions would be exquisite on a couch, chair or bed. Each cushion cover comes with an inner lining with zipper so all that is required is for you to add the Dacron and enjoy your handmade pillow.
