Galaran refers to the bamboo flooring on a traditional sleep pavilion. This galaran motif is used as the background for this classic Solo, Java and inspires sleep and hence this batik is used as a sleeping cover. The batiks from the area of Giriloyo in Central Java are stunning in their use of dark indigo and deep soga browns. For this 2-meter textile, the artist uses a hand drawing technique to apply the wax pattern that will resist the dye. After each dye process the batik artist will re-apply wax to achieve another level of colour.
