During Japan’s occupation of Indonesia during World War II, a type of batik aimed at the Japanese market emerged, called Hokokai. With its two distinct sections, this cloth is also a pagi sore, with pagi meaning morning, and sore, afternoon.

The darker sore section contains large chrysanthemums against a royal purple background of what could be jasmine flowers. The bold background of the lighter pagi section features diagonal bands of parang or keris patterns, with the same robust chrysanthemums arranged across it.

The traditional border of gigi walang, or cricket teeth, is said to protect the wearer. There are two stamps on the cloth, which is in excellent condition: Kemantah MBS Alatas is stamped on the foot as well as J.S.Alojaidi K Pabar.

Hand drawn batik on a single panel on cotton. Natural and synthetic dyes from the north coast of Java. c.1930-1950. Size 252 x 107 cm / 99 x 42 in
