Woven by the Dayak Desa women of Sintang regency in West Kalimantan, the kain bidang is a single-panel ikat textile. The textile features two motifs: "ruit" meaning spear, and "pelangka" which refers to a traditional tool used to remove husks from rice. These motifs hold significance for the Dayak Desa due to their many functions.
Kain bidang holds importance in ceremonies, serving as a platform for offerings or used to wrap them. The mordanting process required to achieve the red dye involves the use of various foraged plants and must be performed ritually. Dayak textiles have long been revered for their unique designs, often inspired by dreams.
Information about the makers will be provided with each cloth.
