A young woman in the remote area of Sulawesi where this textile is made will take on the entire creation of the cloth from the tying of the patterns into threads, the dyeing using mud and tannins to achieve this colorfast black color and weaving on a backstrap loom. The process can take up to two months and the income is substantial that she receives in selling her textile.

The motif is tosso’ balekoan, which represents a niddy noddy used for making skeins of yarn after being spun from cotton fibers into thread.
