The motif you see on this senai is called befajak, a motif often seen on betelnut baskets. The basket is usually made from the lontar palm (Borassus flabellifera) and is always offered to visitors as a show of respect, with the visitor offering their own basket in exchange. These exchanges are ways to create important bonds between social groups.

This dreamy earth-red shoulder cloth is a testament to the revival of traditional weaving in southern Lembata near Lamalera. This shoulder scarf represents Threads of Life’s early efforts to revive traditionally produced textiles, where natural dye techniques had all but vanished.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
Warp ikat, single panel, twisted fringe, commercial cotton, natural dyes. Ikat tied, dyed, and woven in Wulandoni, Lembata, 2018. Size: 188 x 81 cm / 74 x 32 in.
