Threads of Life Workshop with Cinta Bumi Artisans
24 October 2024, 10 AM - 2 PM
Location: Threads of Life Natural Dye Studio
Free Shuttle at 9.30 AM (Pick Up Point Pura Dalem Puri Peliatan)
Explore the alchemy of mark-making on barkcloth or cotton with a mordant intermediary. A mordant fixes colour, and printing with a mordant before dyeing creates a surface design. Working with community-sourced materials — Cinta Bumi Artisans’ traditional barkcloth from Central Sulawesi and Threads of Life’s Symplocos leaf mordant from Flores — uncover intricate patterns and natural colours through an immersive experience with plant materials guided by the Cinta Bumi Artisans and Threads of Life’s dye studio team.
*This workshop is not appropriate for children under 10 years old.
09.30 – 09.45
Participants meet at Pura Dalem Puri Peliatan from where you will be driven 4 kilometres to the workshop location at the Threads of Life Dye Studio and Dye Plant Botanical Garden in Petulu, Ubud.
10.00 – 12.30
The class starts with an introduction to Threads of Life and the work of the natural dye studio, with a guided walk around the dye plant garden and an introduction to the traditional natural dyes of Indonesia.
After that the class will be led by Cinta Bumi Artisans with an introduction to barkcloth, heritage fiber originated from Bada Valley, Central Sulawesi, and mordant printing with Symplocos leaf paste.
