Patterns used in traditional textiles are very specific in their meaning and use. The motif on this cushion is called koko refers to a depression that is found in the earth that cannot be returned to normal or be changed. This is reference to making an unwavering commitment that cannot be changed or to the bonds of relationship that cannot be undone.

The textile that is used to make these cushions is known as sekomandi. It is tied, dyed and woven by a single woman from the area known as Karataun in Sulawesi. The dominant red color is what sekomandi textiles are known for. To achieve this colour is a time-consuming process using the bark of the roots of Morinda citrifolia along with other mordant plants. Indigo is collected from around the gardens to use for accents in the overall textile design.

These cushions would be exquisite on a couch, chair or bed. Each cushion cover comes with an inner lining with zipper so all that is required is for you to add the Dacron and enjoy your handmade pillow.

Ikat on cotton with natural dyes and woven in Mamaju, Sulawesi, 2019. Size 56 x 54 cm / 22 x 21.5 in. Price per piece.
