This stunning textile use unusually large motifs with dragons on either end of the centerfield called kambiha karambo or the footprint of a buffalo. The multi-pronged footprint is a reminder that it is wise to have many sources of income in case there is a crop failure or the loss a trade partner. The naga dragon is likely to have been inspired by the ceramic plates that were part of the currency of the spice trade as Sumba was known for its forests of white sandalwood highly sought after by the Chinese 100's of years ago. The subtle use of reds and blues make this cloth appealing in a different light than the strong colours most often seen on hinggis. A hinggi is a man's hip cloth and worn ceremonially.

This would be gorgeous as a carpet or on the end of a bed or over a couch. Simple and stunning with very masterful tie, dye and weaving.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
Warp ikat, two panels sewn together, commercial cotton, natural dyes, kabakil striped edging and twisted fringe. Ikat tied, dyed and woven in Sumba, 2024. Size 305 x 108 cm / 120 x 42.5 in
