Patterns used in traditional textiles are very specific in their meaning and use. The sekomandi textile used to make these cushion covers is called dappu. Dappu refers to the renewal of partnerships. Within the recurring pattern of the motif there are breaks to remind us that within any relationship there will be things that create disharmony and separation. We need to be aware of this potential and work to avoid conflict.

Each textile is tied, dyed and woven by a single woman from the area known as Karataun in Sulawesi. The solid coloured backing is made by the weavers from Hamba Parengu in East Sumba using the brilliant indigo dye process for which they are famous.

These cushions would be exquisite on a couch, chair or bed. Each cushion cover comes with an inner lining with zipper so all that is required is for you to add the Dacron and enjoy your handmade pillow.

Ikat on cotton with natural dyes and woven in Karataun, Sulawesi 2021. Size 58 x 41 cm / 23 x 16 in. Price per piece.
