A young woman in the remote area of Sulawesi where this textile is made will take on the entire creation of the cloth from the tying of the patterns onto threads, the dyeing using mud and tannins to achieve this colorfast black color and weaving on a backstrap loom. The process can take up to two months and the income is substantial that she receives in selling her textile.

The motif is tumba-tumba refers to a spear head or sharp point which was used as a weapon by warriors or hunters.
