This is a traditional cloth from Bali called rangrang. In Balinese, the word rangrang translates to "space" or "hole". Rangrang is usually worn as as an upper body wrap by women of Nusa Penida for dewa yadnya ceremonies which are performed for the gods.

A slit tapestry weave technique is employed to create this intricate open pattern, with each design individually crafted by the weaver. The red dye is achieved through the difficult dye process using the roots of Morinda citrifolia.

Threads of Life works with farmers and weavers across Bali to re-establish natural dye and sacred weaving traditions, and with the Balinese public to revitalize the role played by these textiles in the island's cultural life.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth
Slit tapestry weave, single panel, twisted fringe, cotton thread, natural dyes. Dyed and woven in Bali, 2023. Size 168 x 46 cm / 66 x 18 in.
