Basketry & Woodwork

Filter
Threads of Life supports traditional basket makers and woodcarvers because baskets and woodwork are as important as the textile arts in carrying Indonesia's indigenous culture forward. Myths, cosmology, stories, and histories are associated with the making and use of woven and carved objects as reminders to support an oral tradition. A vital culture uses many things in this way, linking craft objects with the tools used to make them and the buildings in which they are kept. Landscapes and species of plants and animals are further woven into these webs of meaning, so that an oral tradition is embodied by everything surrounding a speaker.
