Known as tobo alang, this textile’s pattern refers to the carvings on a rice barn. Used for storing crops, they are always paired with traditional homes in this remote part of Central Sulawesi. The motif evokes the importance of sharing the fruits of a harvest or success with family and community.

The selendang, or shoulder scarf, is a single panel textile made with ikat motifs. It uses the red, blues and blacks typical of the sekomandi woven pieces made by weavers of the To Mangki Karatuan ethnic group.

A textile like this is tied, dyed and woven by a single woman and the sale of the textile represents significant income in this isolated region.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
