Kimno as Grandmother

These decorative belts are worn by male dancers as part of their ceremonial dress for ritual performances (likurai). The long cloth is wrapped around the waist, with the ends draping down towards the feet of the dancer. The deep red dye in these pieces are characteristic of Malaka textiles. The colour comes from the bark of Morinda citrifolia roots and a master dyers will dye their threads up to 36 times over several months to achieve this wonderful depth of colour.
