The village of Kaliuda in East Sumba is renowned for its striking crimson dye, and the villagers believe the knowledge to produce it is a gift from their ancestors. Kaliuda textiles are immediately identifiable by their bold red, black, and white colors; the black being an overdye of red and indigo.

The motif njara means horse. Horses are royal symbols. Manu or chicken is an important animal in Sumba as it is used for ceremonies as well as it is considered a reminder to the community to always wake up early to do the chores. Kurang refers to a lobster. The symbol of this motif is to remind people that like the lobster it is important to work together.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
