In Sumba, this single panel cloth known as a teara is worn on the shoulder by women and on the head by men as both everyday and ceremonial dress.

As cocktoos are generally seen in a flock, this motif is symbolic of community, and along with harmony and tolerance, reminds the wearer of its importance. The ruha motif refers to deer and symbolizes high caste, while the floral pattern, hunda rangga, refers to a textile reminiscent of the Indian patola pattern. Historically this motif would only have been worn by nobility.

This is a wonderful piece to wear or hang on a wall.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.

Warp ikat, single panel with twisted fringe, commercial cotton, natural dyes. Ikat tied, dyed and woven in Sumba, 2019. Size 220 x 24 cm / 86.5 x 9.5 in
