Woven by the Dayak Desa women of Sintang regency in West Kalimantan, the kain bidang is a single panel ikat textile. An important part of ceremonies, offerings are placed on it or it may be used to wrap an offering. The mordanting process to achieve the red dye requires many different foraged plants and must be performed with a ritual. Dayak textiles have long been regarded for their unique designs, many of which were inspired by dreams.

The motifs on this cloth are called uwi, beruru, and semengat. Uwi means rattan, of which the growth stages are often depicted in a single textile, from its young, spiny form to maturity, when it is ready to be used for basket weaving. The central motif represents a liana climber (Entada phaseoloides), an important plant in local mythology, while the final motif refers to a ladder to the heavens. Dayak Desa people believe that humans are able to request help from Petera, the protector of all beings, by climbing the semengat to reach the heavens.
