Beti Tnana is a part man’s hip cloth with a center panel made with all ikat patterning and the same motif appearing in the bands on the two side panels. This textile is worn for ceremonies and special occasions. The textiles of Miomafo area in west Timor are renown for their indigo work with intricate ikat. Motifs used include makaif, atoni, beso and noa no’o. The ikat work remains intact and is done by a broad range of women of different ages.

The ikat motif on this textile is beso means frog which is considered an ancestral representation. When Timorese pray for rain, the frog appears which is considered the ancestor answering their prayers.
