This is a decorative belt worn by male dancers in the Malaka regency of Timor, as part of their ceremonial dress for ritual performances, known as likurai. The long cloth is wrapped around the waist, with the ends draping down towards the dancer’s feet.
The ikat motif on this textile is called lenuk or turtle and symbolizes fertility. Water is so essential to these dry outer islands and a motif like the turtle speaks to this. A turtle requires water to live and it also bears many eggs. Weavers believe that in making this motif, she is requesting the ancestor to bring rain and make the land fertile. The deep red dye is characteristic of Malaka textiles. Made from the bark of Morinda citrifolia roots, master dyers will dye their threads up to 36 times over several months to achieve this wonderful depth of colour. Threads of Life works to sustain all traditional weaving and natural dye techniques made by generations gone before while maintaining healthy eco-systems.
Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
Warp ikat, single panel, twisted fringe with beads, handspun cotton, natural dyes. Ikat tied, dyed and woven in Malaka, Timor, 2023. Size 204 x 21 cm / 80.5 x 8.5 in
