The culture of neighboring Savu and Rai Jua islands places great weight on ancestry, birthplace, and community life. While many have converted to Christianity, the traditional belief system, Jingi Tiu, still prevails. It requires all village members to participate in rituals and ceremonies, in which textiles play an important role.

Savunese women’s ceremonial dress falls into three main categories: ei raja, ei ledo, and ei worapi, to which this piece belongs. Its ikat motif is bunga lehu, which refers to the motif found on old batik head scarves.

The motifs of ei worapi can be changed or invented at will, and may be dyed in three colors instead of two. The ikat bands near the head and foot render ei worapi ritually neutral. This category of dress places all women on equal footing, and may have been invented with the arrival of Christiantiy.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
Warp ikat, two panels stiched together and sewn as a tube, commercial cotton, natural dyes. Ikat tied, dyed and woven in Sabu, 2016. Size 166 x 62 cm / 65.5 x 24.5 in
