In Bali this textile is known as a cerik langah, which means a cloth with spacing or openings. Woven on a backstrap loom, the pattern is achieved with a slit tapestry technique. Traditionally this type of open weave textile is worn as a breast wrap and used in ritual dance across the island. It is said the spaces enable the dancer to shift between dimensions.

It was created as part of a collaboration between Threads of Life and Pejeng weavers tto revitalize old styles of Balinese ritual textiles that were discontinued in the 1970s and ’80s, as women were encouraged to find other means of livelihood such as carrying bricks for construction and roadworks.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.

Slit tapestry, single panel, twisted fringe, commercial cotton, natural dyes. Dyed by Threads of Life dye studio., Made in Pejeng, Bali, 2020. Size 214 x 54 cm / 84.5 x 21.5 in
