Importance of Relationships

Patterns used in traditional textiles are very specific in their meaning and use. The motif on this cushion is called tonoling the name of a compound near Rongkong to the north of the Karataun weaver group. This motif refers to the relationship through marriage between the two areas and is a reminder of the importance of relationships. Each textile is tied, dyed and woven by a single woman from the area known as Karataun in Sulawesi. The solid rust color backing is made from handspun cotton and woven on a backstrap loom in Java.
