This extraordinary four-and-a-half meter pori londong textile is a single panel featuring the most important ikat motifs of Mamuju Regency in West Sulawesi. Pori means ikat and londong means long cloth.

The central motifs include tobo sepu, which are also found on walls of traditional rice barns. Tobo means carving, while sepu refers to the special bag carried by women that contains the ingredients for chewing betel, a long-held ritual of hospitality between hosts and guests.

Other motifs include tonoling — the name of a compound near Rongkong to the north of the Karataun weaver group — which is a reminder of the importance of relationships. The tosso balekoan motif represents a niddy-noddy, a tool used for making skeins of yarn after being spun from cotton, while the lelen sepu is a betelnut container. Finally, the Rapang motif refers to an arid area high in the mountains near Batuisi where people would hide during the Dutch colonial rule.

This is a rare textile, especially as it has been entirely spun from hand-picked cotton. Its detailed work and outstanding depth of color make it a true collector piece.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
