According to a legend of the To Mangki Karataun people of Central Sulawesi, an ancestor was meditating in a cave when he saw an old tattered cloth containing the ulu karua motif. He returned to his community with the cloth and the motif was woven again.

This selendang, or shoulder scarf, is a single panel textile made with the ulu karua motif, symbolizing the eight traditional leaders who have specific roles and responsibilities for the wellbeing of their community. A cloth such as this is tied, dyed and woven by one woman and can take up to two months to complete. The sale of these textiles provides a significant source of income for the weavers.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.

Warp ikat, single panel, twisted fringe, commercial cotton, natural dyes. Ikat tied, dyed and woven in Mamuju, Sulawesi, 2017. Size 184 x 23 cm / 72.5 x 9 in
