This unique hinggi textile with the long band of lobster and turtles motifs is traditionally worn by a man as a hip cloth but would be lovely as a wall hanging or bed throw. The weavers of this area of east Sumba known as Kenatang, are best known for their rich plant dye indigo work. It is unusual to combine red dye ikat work as well. The red dye process requires months of work to achieve the colors found on this textile. This would be a beautiful wall hanging, bed throw or something to snuggle up in on a chilly night.
Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
Warp ikat, two panels sewn together, commercial cotton, natural dyes, kabakil striped edging and twisted fringe. Ikat tied, dyed and woven in Sumba, 2024. Size 300 x 112 cm / 118 x 44 in
