This unique textile is made in east Sumba within a community of weavers in Kenatang, best known for their rich plant dye indigo work. The brilliant white ikat patterning denotes a lion and deer or ruha motif and borders the main centerfield containing a kurujungga motif. Only a master weaver is able to maintain the reverse sections where the motif is blue on a white background. The white threads must be securely tied to resist the blue dye.
This would be a beautiful wall hanging, bed throw or something to snuggle up in on a chilly night.
Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
Warp ikat, two panels sewn together, commercial cotton, natural dyes, kabakil striped edging and twisted fringe. Ikat tied, dyed and woven in Sumba, 2024. Size 118 x 44 cm / 46.5 x 17.5 in
