In the village of Hama Parengu in Sumba where this cloth is made, the community maintains its animistic ties to the Marapu or ancestral beliefs, and still follows traditional methods of caring for land and sustaining strong social ties.

The colours on this textile show painstaking time taken to achieve the deep morinda reds and the deep black background. The motifs include the powerful motif of patola ratu or python sky which is also reminiscent of the patterns found on the Indian trade cloths used as currency for the spice trade centuries ago. The kambiha is a footprint of a horse and is a reference to the importance of horses.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
