During Japan’s occupation of Indonesia during World War II, a type of batik aimed at the Japanese market emerged, called Hokokai. With its two distinct sections, this cloth is also a pagi sore, with pagi meaning morning, and sore, afternoon.

The light pagi section features regal peacocks prancing among chrysanthanums, while the sore section contains a wonderful array of flowers, peacocks and butterflies. The cloth is bordered by gigi walang, cricket teeth, which is considered protective to the wearer. This antique batik is in good condition with minor fading in the lower part of the fold and one small repair.
