The Antoni people are an ethnic group in Timor whose culture places great significance on ancestor worship. As in all traditional weaving communities, Antoni weavers feel responsible for passing on their knowledge as their mothers and grandmothers did before them, and thus weaving keeps ancestral wisdom alive.

In this mud dyed textile, which would take up to three months to make, the ancestor motifs stacked one on top of the other are a reminder of community members’ lineage and responsibilities.

It would look mesmerizing as a wall hanging or bed throw.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
Warp ikat, three panels stitched together, twisted fringe, commercial cotton, natural dyes. Ikat tied, dyed and woven in Amanuban, Timor, 2016. Size 207 x 92 cm / 81.5 x 36 in
