During Japan’s occupation of Indonesia during World War II, a type of batik aimed at the Japanese market emerged, called Hokokai. With its two distinct sections, this cloth is also a pagi sore, with pagi meaning morning, and sore, afternoon.

The deep indigo sore section features a beautifully batiked large leaf entwined with delicate lotus flowers. The lighter pagi section contains birds of paradise, butterflies, flowers and rice stalks ready for harvest, against a highly detailed background of diagonal bands of ornate vegetation.

The traditional border of gigi walang, cricket teeth, is said to protect the wearer. This stunning cloth is in very good condition with a few very small holes.

Hand drawn batik, single panel of cotton cloth. Made with natural and synthectic dyes on the northcoast of Java. c.1940. Size 248 x 104 cm / 97.5 x 41 in
