Achieving the rich colors of this cloth requires an exceptionally complex dyeing process. It takes more than four months to tie the tiny ikat patterning on the threads, dye them with indigo, then with the bark of the roots of Morinda citrifolia, followed by another overdye process to attain the deep red-black background.

The motif, njara, means horse. In Flores, horses are still part of the gift exchange between families during marriage rites. This textile would make the perfect gift for someone who loves horses.
