Selendang or shoulder scarf is a single panel textile that is made with ikat motifs using the red, blues and blacks of a sekomandi made by weavers in central Sulawesi who call themselves To Mangki Karataun. A textile like this is tied, dyed and woven by a single woman and the sale of the textile represents significant income in this remote area of Sulawesi. The motif lelen sepu is a betelnut container which irefers to the need to create social harmony. Threads of Life works to sustain all traditional weaving and natural dye techniques made by generations gone before while maintaining healthy eco-systems.
