These strong motifs of the powerful dragons and lions are signs of nobility from Rindi in East Sumba. The image of lions is influenced by the rampant lions found on Dutch coins. This motif can be a symbol of power, authority, and nobility. The dragon is reminiscent of both the Indian naga and the Chinese dragon often found on ceramic plates from the Ming Dynasty. Locally the dragon is called nangga or ular nangga. The nangga on this hinggi represents a snake’s ability to shed and grow skin and is a significant symbol of immortality and rebirth within the indigenous beliefs.
