Manta rays are found throughout the waters of the Indonesian archipelago. For traditional communities they are perceived as being auspicious as they rise out of the water into the air and dive into the depths of the sea. This supplementary weaving technique requires a talented weaver to create the pattern as she weaves. It is from her inspiration and memory as opposed to a supplementary pattern that is pre-created and then woven into the textile. It requires about 10-12 months of time to weave.
