The village of Kaliuda in East Sumba is renowned for its striking crimson dye, and the villagers believe the knowledge to produce it is a gift from their ancestors. Kaliuda textiles are immediately identifiable by their bold red, black, and white colors; the black being an overdye of red and indigo.

With its whimsical collection of motifs of men on horses, birds, and shrimp, this blanket, or hinggi, is imbued with many local stories.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.

Warp ikat, two panels stitched together, commercial cotton, kabakil striped edging and twisted fringe, natural dyes. Ikat tied, dyed and woven in Sumba, 2019. Size 268 x 122 cm / 105.5 x 48 in
