30/2 cotton thread hand-dyed brown with Ceriops tagal bark extract (1100 meters / 1200 yards)
This thread has been hand-dyed at our studio in Ubud, Bali, using extract from the bark of Ceriops tagal trees. This bark, known in Java as tengar, is a central component of the soga dye recipe used in batik making and is one of the Indonesian archipelago's best brown dye sources. Though a common mangrove species, it grows in mangrove forests that are endangered all across Indonesia.
We therefore source our extract from Indonesia's only FSC-certified and responsibly managed concession. The bark is a by-product of forest management and is used by the concession to increase incomes for people living around the forest. People take the bark and boil it up, then remove the bark and boil the water down to precipitate the dye as crystals. The concession then buys the extract and sells it to us. The price is equivalent by weight of fibre dyed to that paid by dyers in Java for the raw bark.
