A cloth like this black and white ikat, mud dyed textile from Sulawesi will take up to 2 months to complete with a single woman overseeing all aspects of the work, tying motifs onto threads from memory, dying the threads and weaving. All while she continues to take care of her family and work in the fields to bring home food. The sale of these textiles represents a significant source of income for these weavers.

Patterns used in traditional textiles are very specific in their meaning and use. The motif on this cushion is called tosso’ balekoan, which represents a niddy noddy used for making skeins of yarn after being spun from cotton fibers into thread.

The textile that is used to make these cushions is known as morilotong. It is tied, dyed and woven by a single woman from the area known as Karataun in Sulawesi. The black and white patterns are very colorfast as they have been properly dyed with tannins and iron rich muds and washed repeatedly in a fast flowing river.

These cushions would be exquisite on a couch, chair or bed. Each cushion cover comes with an inner lining with zipper so all that is required is for you to add the Dacron and enjoy your handmade pillow.
