This remarkable textile is a wonderful way of witnessing the influence that trade has had on traditional textiles over the centuries.

The ends of the cloth contain patterns found on Indian trade cloths that were used as currency during the spice trade in the 15th century. The regal lions featured on Dutch coins used during its occupation of what was then the Dutch East Indies, while the center shell or karihu motif is from a story remembered by the Sumbanese about an ancestor in the form of a sea eagle who flew across vast oceans to find land on which to settle its descendants.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
Warp ikat, single panel, commercial cotton, natural dyes, kabakil striped edging and twisted fringe. Ikat tied, dyed and woven in East Sumba, 2022. 312 x 61 cm / 123 x 24 in
