For the Balinese, the black and white checkered pattern poleng represents Rwa Bhineda, the philosophy of mutual dualism: light and dark, joy and sorrow, heaven and earth, good and evil. Poleng Checkered Cloth is the name Lou gave to this hand drawn batik on cotton. The brown is from soga dyes made from three different tree species, while the deep background is an over dye of indigo.
This piece would look striking draped over a table or adorning a wall, or worn on a cool evening.
Batik hand drawn, single panel, commercial cotton, natural and synthetic dyes. Design by Lou Zeldis and reproduced by Threads of Life with exclusive permission from the Estate of Lou Zeldis in 2024. Size 240 x 102 cm / 94.5 x 40 in
