This deep black morilotong textile from Sulawesi contains the pattern of ulu karua or the eight ancestors. To achieve this rich black colour the threads are boiled in a tannin mixture before immersion in mud. Almost a kilo of young leaves from the bilate tree (Homalanthus novoguinensis) are collected and boiled. Homalanthus has a high tannin content. A wild bean climber called bewak (in the Leguminacae family) is also added. After the depth of dye is reached through repeated applications, the threads are washed in a fast flowing river multiple times until the water runs clear assuring the colour is fast.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
Warp ikat, two panels stitched together, open fringe, commercial cotton, natural dyes. Ikat tied, dyed in Mamuju, Sulawesi, 2019. Size 195 x 118 cm / 77 x 46.5 in
