Open to the Divine

This is a traditional cloth from Bali called rangrang. In Balinese, the word rangrang translates to "space" or "hole". In Bali woman will perform ritual dance in temples wearing a textile such as this that it made with an slit tapestry weave and wraps around the upper body. The small openings in the cloth are said to be what allow the spirit of the dancer to connect to the divine – the solid sections keep her in her body-the cloth aids her to move between the two dimensions.

This textile would be perfect worn as a shawl or placed on a couch to wrap in when feeling chilly.
Threads of Life works with farmers and weavers across Bali to re-establish natural dye and sacred weaving traditions, and with the Balinese public to revitalize the role played by these textiles in the island's cultural life.
