This woman's sarong, Lawo Singgi One which means that the central motif has bands on the outer edges. It is worn for special ceremonies by the people of Ndona in Central Flores near Ende. These weavers are renown for their excellent red dye work. The central ikat motif on this textile is called mata rote koba which is a reference to a vine that connects heaven and earth.
The natural dye process is one of the most complex we have recorded taking several months to complete.
