Tating is a traditional tubular skirt with embellishments of bells, beads and shells worn by the Dayak Desa women of West Kalimantan for special ceremonies. Dayak textiles have always been highly regarded for their unique designs, many of which are woven from dreams.

This textile has two different motifs; sandung and ticak serawak. A sandung is a shrine that houses skulls and bones of deceased family members and ancestors. The sandung is used as a place of worship during ceremonies that celebrate battle victories, and also honour the ancestors and spirits. As a motif it is considered as culturally potent and powerful and is only used on certain cloths and woven by certain weavers. There is also a gecko motif which are considered auspicious if their call is heard during a meeting as whatever words were spoken at that time are considered to be the truth and to be honored.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
Warp ikat, single panel stitched together and sewn as a tube, commercial cotton, natural dyes, sewn beads, shells, and bells. Made in Sintang, West Kalimantan 2021. Size 68 x 59 cm / 27 x 23 in
