This stunning textile is a wonderful way of seeing the influence of trade over the centuries has impacted on traditional textiles. The ends of the cloth contain patterns found on Indian trade cloths that were used as the currency during the spice trade. The rampant lions are what were found on Dutch coins used during the Dutch trade and the lovely center shell or karihu motif is from a story remembered by the Sumbanese about the ancestor in the form of a sea eagle who flew across vast oceans to find land to settle its descendants.

Information about the makers will be supplied with each cloth.
