The village of Kaliuda in East Sumba is renowned for its striking crimson dye, and the villagers believe the knowledge to produce it is a gift from their ancestors. Kaliuda textiles are immediately identifiable by their bold red, black, blue and white colours. The motif of horse, men on horses and cattle are laid out in rows at the head and foot of the textile with the centerfield having a separte motif. This textile has Ruha motif, refers to a deer. This motif may only be used on textiles by the high caste or royals of Sumba. The other motifs include the manu walu is a rooster. Roosters are symbolic of noble people as they are able to point out what is wrong. They are thought to have the ability to lead with wisdom.
